Why 002 Solutions exists

Small businesses and founders need senior technology help, but the market is mostly set up to sell them something else. Here's what I'm trying to do differently.

The consulting market has two tiers.

At the top: big firms that charge enterprise rates, send in a rotating cast of junior consultants, and produce a lot of slides. At the bottom: managed-service providers that want you on a monthly retainer and will put a ticket queue between you and anyone who can actually fix your problem.

Almost nothing sits cleanly in the middle — one experienced person who’ll look at what you have, tell you the truth about it, and then do the work. That’s the space 002 Solutions is trying to occupy.

What “senior-level, scoped engagement” actually means

Three things, in practice:

  1. You talk to the person doing the work. No account manager, no junior handoff, no “let me loop in someone from our delivery team.” If we’re working together, we’re working together.

  2. The scope is written down before anything starts. A short document with deliverables, timeline, and a fixed price. You approve it. Then the work happens. No scope creep, no surprise invoices.

  3. You can tell whether it worked. Every engagement ends with something concrete — a running app in the App Store, a working integration, a written recommendation you can actually act on. Not a deck of slides that justify another engagement.

This is unglamorous in a way that the consulting industry doesn’t love, because the industry makes more money on long ambiguous engagements than on short crisp ones. But it’s what most small businesses actually need.

Who I’m building this for

The clearest way to describe the fit is by counter-example. 002 isn’t a great match if you need:

  • An ongoing managed services relationship. If your IT person is supposed to pick up the phone when something breaks on a Saturday, you need an MSP, not me.
  • A staff augmentation role on an existing team. If your engineering org has five iOS devs and wants a sixth for six months, there are better options.
  • A “fractional CTO” on a long retainer. Some people genuinely need that. It’s not what I do.

It is a great match if you’re:

  • A small business that needs senior help on a specific thing, not an ongoing relationship
  • A founder shipping an iOS app and wanting one person to own it end-to-end
  • A team wondering whether some AI-assisted workflow would actually save time
  • Someone about to commit to a big technical decision and wanting an independent read first

What’s next

This blog is going to be a place for short, practical notes on the work — patterns I see repeatedly, decisions worth thinking about out loud, and the occasional opinion about tools. If any of that sounds useful, subscribe to the RSS feed or get in touch.
